Muir Macdonald Managing Director of Bath based BMT Defence Services has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

The Academy’s Fellows represent the nation’s best engineering researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business and industry leaders. Election to the Academy is by invitation only; about 50 Fellows are elected each year in recognition of their outstanding and continuing contributions to engineering.

Muir joins an exclusive group which includes Lord Bamford, Chairman of the JCB Group, Sir James Dyson, Vice-Admiral Simon Lister, who currently serves as Chief of Materiel (Fleet) and Chief of Fleet Support for the Royal Navy, as well as Peter French, Chief Executive of BMT Group.

Darcy Byrtus

Darcy Byrtus, President of BMT Fleet Technology

Earlier this year, BMT Fleet Technology appointed Darcy Byrtus as President. With over 30 years’ experience in the management of defence projects, Darcy’s previous assignments included requirements analysis, design development and review, cost control monitoring and contract compliance.

Darcy joins BMT from General Dynamics Canada where he held the post of Director of Business Development for Naval Programs and Project Management. There, he was responsible for the strategic planning, opportunity identification and pursuit for all naval programs and for

the promotion of General Dynamics’ capabilities to the Canadian Department of National Defence.

Acquiring a dual Masters in Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering from MIT and a degree in Physics and Oceanography from Royal Roads Military College, Darcy has served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Marine Systems Engineering Officer, a Ship Naval Architect and an Engineering Manager. Darcy is a member of the Project Management Institute, and a past President of the Ottawa Branch of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers.

Roy Quilliam

Roy Quilliam, Business Development Director at BMT Defence Services

BMT Defence Services has appointed Roy Quilliam as Business Development Director. Roy joined BMT in 1990 and previously held the position of Technical Director since 2003. He has a broad technical background from concept and feasibility design through to major in service design change, and from policy issues through to practical engineering.

Catriona Savage

Catriona Savage, Technical Director at BMT Defence Services

BMT Defence Services has appointed Catriona Savage as Technical Director. Previously Head of Naval Architecture, Catriona will be responsible for the quality and delivery of technical skills and capability through leadership of the technical departments. This includes maintaining and developing diversity and depth of skills, training and directing the R&D programme to meet the needs of BMT’s customers.

Andy Harris

Andy Harris, Head of Naval Architecture at BMT Defence Services

BMT Defence Services has appointed Andy Harris as the new Head of Naval Architecture. Andy is a chartered engineer who joined BMT in 1996, having graduated from the University of Southampton with a bachelor’s degree in Ship Science. During his career at BMT, Andy has worked on the in-service support of submarines, surface ship stability modelling, the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier programme and the Type 26 Global Combat Ship programme.

Dan Oakley

Dan Oakley, Sales Director at BMT Reliability Consultants

BMT Reliability Consultants has appointed Dan Oakley as Sales Director. Holding a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Fluid Power Systems, Dan has over 20 years’ experience specialising in systems engineering. Dan’s new role will see him take responsibility for developing customer relationships and supporting the company’s continuing expansion and development.

Sebastian Sjoberg

Sebastian Sjoberg, Sales and Business Development Manager at BMT SMART

BMT SMART has appointed Sebastian Sjoberg as Sales & Business Development Manager. Sebastian has a BSc in Naval Architecture and has over 10 years’ experience within the maritime sector working with suppliers of software solutions for shipping, shipyards and consulting companies. As Sales & Business Development Manager, Sebastian will be responsible for the Asia Pacific and Scandinavian Territories.

Ralph Dodds

Ralph Dodds, Business Development Lead at BMT Isis

BMT Isis has appointed Ralph Dodds as the new Business Development Lead for the company’s Transport team. Previously Senior Project Manager and Business Development Lead for Maritime Training at QinetiQ, Ralph will be responsible for growing BMT Isis’ expanding transport portfolio with particular emphasis on the aviation domain.
